Rough sleeping in the UK has increased by 165% since 2010 (Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government, 2019).
In a 2017 survey, 67% of the homeless in Brighton reported at least one preventable health condition and 34% reported that their health condition contributed to unemployment and difficulty handling daily living. The risk of death is 8 times higher in people who experience these conditions. (Off the Fence website)
Off the Fence are a Hove-based charity running projects providing key services for homeless people, such as:
- Sleeping bags and clean clothes
- Food and hot drinks
- Hygiene items
- Hot showers and laundry services
- Information, signposting and referrals
- Help with paperwork and form filling
- Key worker support
- Courses and workshops
- Dental and podiatry care
- NHS support and haircuts
Despite being a small city, Brighton and Hove is in the top 10 in the https://www.offthefence.org.uk/hygiene-for-allcountry for rough sleepers and may have the biggest street sleeping problem outside of London (The Big Issue, 2019).
