Sophia and Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia

Every year, each Mooncup team member is given a share of the Mooncup funds to donate to a charity of their choice. Sophia, one of our Mooncup Advisors, explains her choice here:

Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia is dedicated to the prevention and treatment of obstetric fistulas by providing world class reconstructive surgery and holistic rehabilitation programmes to those in need. Their aim is to eradicate obstetric fistula in Ethiopia by training midwives and thereby increasing the number of women receiving care during childbearing from skilled practitioners which currently stands at just 15%.

Obstetric fistula is a medical condition where a hole between the rectum and/ or bladder and the vagina occurs following obstructed labour and inadequate childbirth support/ access to medical facilities. As well as the enormous impact of urinary or faecal incontinence and resultant secondary health complications, sufferers experience significant negative psychological effects and devastating social stigma, often being shunned by their families and community. In Ethiopia alone an estimated 3,700 women develop fistula injuries each year, with around 39,000 women suffering with an untreated fistula.

I’ve chosen to support Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia because I believe that everybody should have access to skilled care and necessary facilities during childbirth and that no-one should be left with the injuries and lack of dignity that an untreated obstretric fistula creates.
