How to be Zero-Waste at Festivals – What to Pack this Summer

The tickets are paid for, lifts have been shared and your backpack is dusted off for another year at least. It’s festival season and who knows, the sun may very well be shining.

In this blog post we are taking a look at how to lower your impact on the planet and make your festival experience a little more zero-waste this summer…

5 Zero-Waste tips for festival season

Plus, don’t forget to check out our more general Festival Packing List at the bottom of the page 🙂

1. Ditch the single use food and drink packaging

With a little bit of preparation you can avoid contributing to the huge amounts of waste generated at festivals every year. Here is a quick check list of reusable items we couldn’t live without:

• Reusable water bottle
• Reusable pint cup*
• Cutlery
• Reusable plates
• Cloth tote for any shopping

*many festivals have schemes in which you use the same cup at all the bars, check this out before you go.

2. Own your period and pack your Mooncup
Whoever’s on at the festival you don’t want it to be you! 😉

While we wouldn’t recommend using the Mooncup for the first time at a festival, if you’re an old-hand*, the Mooncup is perfect!

*We’d say on average 3 cycles use

You don’t have to deal with used tampons or pads, or carry supplies (just empty the cup and reinsert). And since the Mooncup menstrual cup can hold more than a regular tampon, you can spend less time worrying about where to find a toilet and more time having fun!

Top tip: Take a bottle of water in to the toilet with you to rinse your Mooncup menstrual cup. You can find out more tips on our FAQ page on Travelling with the Mooncup.

3. Self-care

Staying clean at a festival is tricky as showers are few and far between, often with really long queues; who wouldn’t forfeit washing for a rare opportunity to see their favourite band?

Wet wipes are often at the top of people’s festival packing list. However, they can simply be replaced with a couple of flannels and a wash bowl. If you feel that you can’t ditch the wet wipes, then biodegradable options are available as a runner up to the trusty flannel.

4. Put the brakes on fast fashion

Check your wardrobe. Do you really need to buy a new pair of sparkly wellies?! 😉  Borrow items from friends or check out charity and vintage shops on and offline. Get creative and get planning!

5. Take responsibility

In the words of Glastonbury festival ‘Leave no Trace’! Everything you take to a festival should come home with you. Leaving your tent, one-wheeled- broken trolley and any other bits of camping equipment is not cool!

Dispose of your litter in festival recycling bins where available or alternatively take it away with you to recycle when you get back home.

Top tip: Pack as lightly as possible so packing down your camp with the ‘end of festival’ blues isn’t as daunting and you are less likely to be tempted to leave anything behind!

Here’s our general, tried and tested festival pack list:

First off only take the things that you really, really need.  There’s no point in loading yourself up too much as you will inevitably have to drag it all the way across the festival site to where you set up camp!

It can be a long walk from the festival entrance to where you set up camp and you will have to drag everything there and back.

Remember to leave no trace! Take everything home with you that you brought to the festival.
